BBC’s McMafia finds that this period of lockdown across the world is making people delve deep into past dramas that they haven’t watched or forgotten were on television. One of the very best that has been received hugely positive reviews is McMafia. The series was broadcast on the BBC early in 2018, but millions around the world are now binge-watching the show after all the episodes were released on Netflix.
This would be the perfect time to catch up on all the action so far, as the BBC has recently commissioned a second season of the drama. McMafia is created by James Watkins and Hossein Amini and is inspired by the book called McMafia: A Journey Through the Global Criminal Underworld by Misha Glenny.
BBC’s McMafia: What Is It About?
The main character of the series is Alex Godman, who is played by James Norton. Alex has ties with the Russian mafia but is determined to live a clean life out of the shadows of his dodgy family business. However, tragedy sees him pulled into the family business as he tries to protect his family from criminals trying to get their revenge.
Alex works at an investment company, but he is soon forced into helping his family after his uncle was brutally murdered after a hit being put out by Russian boss Vadim Kalyagin. The main character is then put in a corner as he is forced to take the money being offered by Israeli businessman Semiyon Kleiman in order to save his business while also getting revenge on the people that murdered his uncle
BBC’s McMafia: Who Stars In The Drama?
Norton’s role as Alex has led him to become the bookmakers favourite to be the next James Bond, while his co-stars include Juliet Rylance, who plays his fiancée, David Strathaird, who plays Kleiman and Merab Ninidze, who plays Kalyagin.
The drama is fantastically unpredictable, as viewers watch on as Alex gets deeper and deeper into the criminal underworld. His university friend Antion Mendez (Caio Blat) offers his help, but viewers are never sure what his true intentions are. The series also won the International Emmy for Best Drama Series in 2019, which highlights just how thrilling this series is.
