Our Vice President revisited her appreciation for hip-hop when Kamala Harris hosted a 50th-anniversary hip-hop party in her backyard.
One of the most memorable entrances in recent years was when 2020 Vice President Kamala Harris walked out to deliver her election victory speech to the song “Work That” by Mary J. Blige.
Getting the Party Started
Harris remarked that “hip-hop is the ultimate American art form.” She said she was a big supporter of the genre. She commented that old-school rapper Chuck D from Public Enemy’s music was like “Black America’s CNN.”
Kamala quickly pointed out hip-hop’s enormous impact on the black community and music in general. She also eloquently said hip-hop does a beautiful job of telling stories that are not in the news.
Some of the guests at the party included hip-hop giants like Lil’ Wayne, Slick Rick, Common, Jeezy, MC Lyte, Doug E. Fresh, and Fat Joe.
Harris grew up listening to hip-hop music and is entrusted with promoting diversity and equality in every aspect of American life. Harris also revealed that she knows every word of Rapper’s Delight by the Sugarhill Gang.
A fan of the genre since its inception, Harris wanted a special night commemorating the art form.
Kamala and her husband, Doug Emhoff, are both fans of hip-hop. “This is a hip-hop household,” he excitedly proclaimed. Harris and her husband finally stepped aside to let the performers do the talking.
Rappers Lil’ Wayne and Doug E. Fresh performed to get the party started. Harris coordinated the event with the Live Nation Urban and the Recording Academy’s Black Music Collective.
Getting Attention for the Wrong Reason
The festivities took an embarrassing turn when Harris decided to dance to a twenty-four-year-old Q-Tip song, “Vivrant Thing,” and some critics made fun of her, saying that she was showing off her “Granny moves.”
She did a bit of a “white man’s dance” for all to see. She was also wearing neon pink, which made her bee-bopping around all the more awkward, hearing her dance the name, “The cackle shuffle.” This must be a reference to her equally awkward and often inappropriate laughter.
This party is not the first time Harris has been called out for awkward dancing. She was seen on “Watch What Happens Live with Andy Cohen” dancing very badly.
Once the dancing went viral, the comments started firing off, with some saying that she looked ridiculous and others exclaiming that she dances better than any VP in history.
People have even dubbed her dance moves as cringe-worthy. With everything going on in the country, she was focusing her efforts on celebrating hip-hop. Some other politicians decided to join in the festivities, Rep. Cory Bush and Sen. Raphael Warnock.
One thing is undoubtedly true: Nothing is more embarrassing and awkward than Trump’s infamous YMCA dance. What about the spotlight makes them think they can” let loose” and not appear foolish?
Harris may have looked bad, but Trump’s dancing is an abomination. While it is good that Harris hosted the first-of-its-kind hip-hop celebration, perhaps politicians should stick to the issues and stay off the dance floor.
