Ashton Kutcher’s resignation is an attempt at damage control. He has decided to resign from the board of his anti-sex abuse charity, Thorn.
Ashton’s wife, Mila Kunis, an observer on the organization’s board of directors, has also decided to resign. Apparently, people didn’t appreciate their decision to support a rapist.
In case you haven’t been brought up to speed, Ashton Kutcher and Mila Kunis each wrote letters of support concerning Danny Masterson to achieve leniency in his rape trial.
All three actors were a part of “That 70’s Show” and grew up together in Hollywood. They all became close when working on the show. Some That 70’s Show actors decided it would be a good idea to support Masterson during his trial.
The Cost of Supporting Masterson
Being anti-drug and being a father does not make you a good person. Kutcher and Kunis explained to the Judge presiding over the case that Masterson was excellent because he encouraged them to stay away from drugs and people who do drugs.
They claimed that Masterson was a positive influence over them. They also mentioned what a loving father he is. Kutcher said that taking Masterson away from his daughter was an injustice in itself. Huh?
Understandably, there has been significant backlash concerning Kutcher and Kunis’s openly supporting Masterson and writing character letters to the Judge in the case.
Kutcher and Kunis later apologized for writing the letters. They said that the last thing they wanted to do was retraumatize Masterson’s victims to make them feel their experience was somehow invalid. However, they did the damage.
Kutcher stepped down from his role at Thorn. Thorn is a non-profit anti-sex abuse charity that defends children from sexual abuse.
Thorn: A Worthy Cause
Demi Moore and Ashton Kutcher co-founded Thorn in 2012. They had learned about child sex trafficking and wanted to do something to help end online child sex abuse. The charity develops technology to protect children from exploitation.
Kutcher claimed that he and Kunis did a lot of talking to and learning from leadership at Thorn over the past few days.
The two of them determined that it would be the responsible choice for them to step down from their duties at the organization. Kutcher resigned as Chairman of the Board, effective immediately.
Kutcher claimed that he wanted the focus of Thorn’s mission to be on the children the organization is dedicated to saving.
This gesture is nothing more than a way to save face for Kutcher and Kunis, and it is highly likely that if Danny Masterson had not been convicted of his crimes, the couple would be singing a different tune.
Danny Masterson was recently found guilty of two out of three counts of rape and was sentenced to 30 years to life behind bars. Of course, Ashton Kutcher and Mila Kunis now suddenly feel bad.
