Actress Anne Heche has opened up on how her relationship with Ellen DeGeneres ended up hurting her career.

Actress Anne Heche Reveals How Her Relationship With Ellen DeGeneres Hurt Her Career- I Felt Like ‘Patient Zero In Cancel Culture’

The pair had been together for a period of three years, when they decided to hook up in 1997. But once the media discovered that they were an item, Anne felt that there were consequences over how she was viewed in the spotlight.

During an interview with Page Six, Anne spoke about how it cost her a movie role. She said: “I was fired from a $10 million picture deal and did not see the light of day in a studio picture.”

This came to the fore when Anne was set to be in a romantic film called ‘Six Days, Seven Nights.’ She was set to star alongside Harrison Ford, but when it became clear that she was in a relationship with Ellen, the producers had a change of heart.

They felt that the movie would not resonate with the audience, knowing that Anne was a lesbian. Although Harrison was supportive of Anne, it did not stop Anne from losing that role.

She added: “He [Harrison] said, Frankly my dear, I don’t give a damn who you’re sleeping with. We have a romantic comedy to make. Let’s make it the best one that’s ever happened.”

Nevertheless, Anne had no regrets over the decision she made in her life. She was proud of the fact that she was able to stand up for what she believed in.

And given that same-sex relationships are more acceptable now, she broke the mould by showing others that she did not care about the expectation that society had on what a relationship should be.

And yet, she did still have to pay the price for her actions. She stated: “[I felt like] patient zero in cancel culture… I’m a part of it. It is a badge of honour.”

Anne’s story will resonate with other actors who may be going through something similar. But by taking the lead, she is showing that it is possible to have a career even if, in the short-term, such a disclosure might harm it.
