Andy Cohen’s Controversial Soap Comments: Queen Susan Lucci Completely Disagrees

If there’s one thing you don’t want to do, it’s mess with the Queen, especially if you happen to be her biggest fan, too. Andy Cohen is being dragged in every direction possible after he made the claim that the Real Housewives franchise has supposedly ‘replaced’ the soap opera industry. But according to All My Children alum and undisputed Queen of the daytime television world, Susan Lucci, that’s not the case at all. Here’s what you need to know.

During the May 19th ABC special, The Story of Soaps, Andy Cohen said he believes that modern day reality shows have replaced the soap industry and worse, have also rendered them obsolete. During the program, Andy said, “We’re voyeurs, but we also love stories. We want to be entertained, and I think that the ultimate expression of voyeurism is reality television. I know [Susan] Lucci doesn’t agree with me, but I think that the Housewives have replaced soap operas because truth is stranger than fiction. Soaps became kind of unnecessary because you could do it with real people, and they’re writing the drama themselves.”

And while soap fans have certainly expressed their opinion over Andy’s comments, he might want to walk back on what he said after hearing what Susan Lucci had to say prior to his statement. The actress says there’s a clear and distinct different between reality shows such as the Real Housewives and long-running soaps like General Hospital, Days of Our Lives, and The Bold and the Beautiful.

“I don’t think they are the modern-day soaps,” Susan told Page Six at the American Heart Association’s Go Red for Women Red Dress Collection event in New York back in February, and before the coronavirus pandemic. “There’s no storytelling. There’s a lot of editing. It’s, like, they cut to the chase all the time, and I think it’s different.”

Apparently, Cohen has been making these kind of claims for many years. In 2014, he even told CBS This Morning in an interview, “I think the ‘Housewives’ have replaced the modern-day soap opera in a weird way for a lot of people. Soap operas — scripted soap operas — there’s only a couple on the air right now, and truth is stranger than fiction.”
