George Clooney Says That Matthew Perry Wasn’t Happy On ‘Friends’: “It Didn’t Bring Him Joy”

In a recent interview with Deadline, George Clooney opened up about Matthew Perry’s struggle with happiness despite achieving success on “Friends” due to his battle with addiction to alcohol and drugs.

Reflecting on Perry’s aspirations, Clooney mentioned that Perry had dreamt of landing a role in a sitcom, which he achieved by portraying Chandler Bing on “Friends” in 1994. However, the ongoing struggles with addiction made it challenging for Perry to fully embrace and enjoy his success.

Clooney told Deadline that, “He was a kid and all he would say to us, I mean me, Richard Kind and Grant Heslov, was, ‘I just want to get on a sitcom, man. I just want to get on a regular sitcom and I would be the happiest man on earth. And he got on probably one of the best ever. He wasn’t happy. It didn’t bring him joy or happiness or peace.”

Even though they worked closely together on the sets of “ER” and “Friends,” Clooney admitted that he and the others didn’t really know “what was going through” Matthew Perry at the time. In the 1990s, Clooney was shooting “ER” at the same time that Perry was working on “Friends,” two hugely successful television series.

Clooney continued to say, “And it also just tells you that success and money and all those things, it doesn’t just automatically bring you happiness. You have to be happy with yourself and your life.” On October 28, the 54-year-old star of “17 Again” was found dead in the pool of his $4 million Hollywood estate.

According to the autopsy report obtained by Page Six, the cause of death was determined to be a lethal mix of buprenorphine and ketamine. The latter is used to help with pain management and therapy for opioid addiction.

The actor had been receiving ketamine infusions on a regular basis, according to the medical examiner’s findings; his final authorized dosage was given a week prior to his tragic death.
