Scream IRL? Scared Californians Call Sonoma Police On Mystery Person Dressed As the Ghostface Killer From Slasher Horror Flick Scream

Locals in California contacted the police after spotting a sinister man dressed as Ghostface from the film Scream standing menacingly at crosswalks. On Monday in Sonoma, the masked man was seen lurking at the border of a crosswalk.

They proceeded to cross the street before mugging for the camera while donning the ghoul costume that first appeared in 1996 during the debut of the first Scream movie. This Ghostface wasn’t carrying a weapon, unlike the movie version that slashed people to death.

However, residents continued to be terrified and afraid of potential copycat crimes, and some even called the police. Only then did they discover the truth: the figure was a prop created as part of a marketing stunt for Scream 6, which opens in theaters on March 10.

Officers went to investigate and discovered that the individual wearing the disguise was harmless and only there to promote the upcoming horror movie. In recent weeks, Ghostface has been observed in a number of American cities, including New Orleans, St. Louis, and Sonoma, which serves as a stand-in for the fictional town of Woodsboro in the film.

The cult movie centers on a string of brutal killings in the sleepy town of Woodsboro and a murderer named Ghostface who picks out teenagers as his victims. Neve Campbell, David Arquette, Courteney Cox, Matthew Lillard, and Drew Barrymore appeared in the Wes Craven-helmed slasher series that debuted in 1996. Campbell gave up following Scream 5. Ghostface personally killed Arquette and Barrymore’s characters, with Lillard’s character passing away in the first film after being revealed to be Ghostface.
