Survivor 42: Burdens and Privileges and Stands -Oh My. What a Tribal!

Survivor 42 continues to prove that Survivor 41 was truly playing in the minor leagues as Drea Wheeler and Maryanne Oketch made a major stand at tribal council (number 2 of 2) during this past week’s episode.

It was the same message that many of the castaways of color were trying to get across during season 41- the first evenly cast season (in regards to equal numbers of people of color and white contestants—very different to the previous 40 seasons).

However in one sentence, Maryanne’s eloquent words drove Drea’s (and many other POC contestants’) stance home, “Yes, we all technically have a 1 in 18 shot for the million, but because we all come with our burdens and all come with our privileges, that 1 in 18 might be bigger or smaller for some people.”

No, it’s not always going to be race that defines these privileges and burdens, but this week it was – prompting Drea to outwardly tell her 5 person mini-tribe that she would play her idol, refusing to become black jury member number 3 of 3.

Mary Anne stood by Drea, making the same stand and playing her idol, forcing jury member number 3 to be either white Tori Meehan or white Lindsay Dolashewich. My woman-crush Lindsay was saved and Tori’s bottom-lingering days were finally over.

Interestingly, it was Tori’s adversary, Rocksroy Bailey’s torch snuffing that sealed Tori’s fate. The two must be having a grand ole time at Ponderosa right now. Poor Chanelle Howell.

Other than Johnathan Young Just. Not. Getting. It (for the cheap seats in the back- you don’t know, you can’t know so zip it and listen and DO NOT DIMINISH ANOTHER’S EXPERIENCE) and still selfishly interjecting he was glad it was cleared up that the tribe wasn’t making Drea and Maryanne feel insignificant or persecuted (just the world at large- phew!), it was another magnificent Survivor moment where real life issues were dealt with head on.

Props to Probst who, as host, could’ve brushed Drea’s reaction to seeing Rocksroy joining the jury under the carpet (or under his slick hair-do) and moved along to ask Johnathon what he truly thought of Rocksroy’s half-baked sausage-fest alliance idea.

Instead, Jeff steered into the skid and even gave us great television by abolishing the secret vote, allowing us all see Tori grow disappointed in God, who apparently isn’t a Survivor stan and may be dealing with some issues in say…Ukraine, rather than helping a gal out with a shot in the dark.

It’s going to be interesting to see Omar Zaheer, Hai Giang, Romeo Escobar and Mike Turner, chilling in their all-men’s half-tribe (without being an all men’s alliance) be joined by a very electrically charged Maryanne, Johnathan, Drea and Lindsay when the tribe join becomes whole again.
