Matt James, from The Bachelor, has continued to receive criticism over his performance on the show but not in the traditional sense.

The star has been questioned over his alleged bizarre kissing technique. When speaking to ACC Network’s In Play, Matt admitted that there might be some merits to the claim. He said: “Dang, you all threw me under the bus, that’s crazy. I guess I didn’t realize I kiss with my eyes open until people were videotaping me kiss people, and I’m watching it back. I’m like, ‘Yo, what are you doing?'”
He then apologized for how it all came across. He added: “It was just as uncomfortable for me to watch as everybody else. So like, everyone is telling me, ‘You need to close your eyes!’ There’s gonna be a lot of this because this has already been filmed. I apologize to fans, but maybe I need to start wearing shades? If I were to do this again, I’d probably have an eye patch or something. It’s a learning experience.”
And the show’s host Chris Harrison revealed there is more than meets the eye when it comes to Matt. When speaking to Us Weekly, he said: “There is a depth and layers to him — the likes of which we’ve never seen on this show. There are issues that we need to dive into, issues that he realizes along the way, that if we don’t face head-on, we’re not going anywhere.
“It is contentious at times, it’s emotional at times, it’s gut-wrenching, it’s anger. You’re going to get it all. Bless him for going through this because he went through the wringer.” Despite the comments above, Matt has been received negatively from the audience, which was reflected in the show’s very low ratings. However, the executive of the show (Rob Mills) downplayed any fears.
When speaking to Variety, he said: “I actually think you’re going to see ratings rise more exponentially than you would during previous seasons because people are going to start talking about it and word-of-mouth is going to kick in.” He then added this might be because Matt is completely new to the show: “We’re sort of starting on a blank page, which I think is good.
