On The World’s Smallest Woman, Jyoti Amge related the absolutely cringe-worthy story about what happened to her legs and the biggest reason as to why she’s in the US – medical treatment. She told the story about how her family went on vacation in India to this mountain so that Jyoti could play in the snow.
Her Dad was hiking up the mountain, carrying her, when he tripped and fell and both of them got hurt, but Jyohti is the one who is still suffering the consequences of said fall. She had two bilateral fractures in her legs, but her left leg is by far the worst one.
She said she cannot stand or walk for longer than 10 minutes at a time, and everywhere she has to be carried. She cannot shut doors, or even turn on the tap to wash her hands, or even go to the bathroom by herself.
The reason being is that Jyohti lacks growth hormones and it has affected her stature. They also feel like this is the reason that her legs have not healed from the accident, usually when a person breaks a bone, the growth hormones are intrinsic in the healing process. Without those hormones, honestly I don’t see how Jyoti’s legs ever knitted back together. Ouch!
The World’s Smallest Woman: What is wrong with Jyohti’s legs?
At this doctor’s visit, Jyohti was diagnosed with Primordial Dwarfism which, according to the doctor is extremely rare. He said she would have to have a geneticist to confirm it but that is what he was suspecting.
Also, he was saying of her legs that there would definitely need to be surgery in order to fix them but Jyohti didn’t want that, all she wanted was a new brace to hold the bone in place and possibly some new treatment so that the bones could heal correctly.
She said that she was warned that surgery was extra risky because of her size and that doctors had previously warned her that there is no guarantee she could walk again even with surgery. You had to feel for her when she said that she just didn’t want to cause herself anymore suffering.
However an update at the end of the episode had Jyohti saying that at urging of her family she had agreed to talk with the specialist and see what they said, so I guess we’ll see what that brings.
