Beverly Hills 90210 Flashback: Revisiting the Summer of Deception

Beverly Hills, 90210 flashback reveals there was a huge plotline that divided some of the fanbase. It also really showed how horrible some of the characters were. One in particular earned our wrath when we revisited this through reruns. Let’s go back to another time…

Beverly Hills, 90210 Flashback: The summer of deceptionbb

One of the most well-known and classic arcs came to be known as the Summer of Deception. This was when Brenda Walsh (Shannen Doherty) went to France with Donna Martin (Tori Spelling). While they were busy learning the value of not ordering something unless you’re completely sure what it is, trouble brewed in the States.

Beverly Hills, 90210 Flashback: Revisiting the Summer of Deception

This Beverly Hills, 90210 flashback found Kelly Taylor (Jennie Garth) and Dylan McKay (Luke Perry) getting close. Real close. While there were brief moments of doubt and guilt, these two still went full speed ahead with a summer romance that left everyone needing to choose a side. So, what did this reveal about the characters we’d been following for a couple of years at that point?

Beverly Hills, 90210 Flashback: Choosing teams

Mostly? It made everyone look suspect. Everyone seemed to take Kelly’s side in this situation. Not even Brenda’s twin brother, Brandon Walsh (Jason Priestly) seemed to hold any ill will against the guy who broke his sister’s heart. For most guys, that would probably be a beat down. Or at least a burning hatred for him for years to come. Not so much. This Beverly Hills, 90210 flashback kind of hurts, because we were definitely #TeamBrandon at the time. Even though we were in the age group where the brooding bad boy was the typical choice, we saw through that and realized how problematic the tortured soul thing could be.

Eventually, things all but returned to normal. Well, until Shannen was about to leave the show. But that’s a topic for another day. These friends torn apart by a guy came together again and we got to enjoy the whole gang united for their last year as West Beverly. So where did we stand?

Beverly Hills 90210 Flashback: Where we stand

We were firmly on Brenda’s side. She always was called the “bad girl” on the show, but we honestly can’t think of anything she did that was overtly horrible. She never moved in on a friend’s boyfriend, like Kelly. And she didn’t become a serial cheater like Kelly, either. Most of her “bad girl” antics were more being a head strong teenager than anything.
