ABC ‘The Bachelor’ Spoilers: Rachel Lindsay Criticizes ABC Series For Waiting To Cast Matt James Only After George Floyd’s Death

ABC ‘The Bachelor’ Spoilers finds that ‘The Bachelorette’ star Rachel Lindsay criticized the franchise for not having a black lead on the show. But now that a black lead has been announced, Matt James, the reality star says that she’s not happy with the timing. Even though there were plenty of calls to help cast Matt on the show, Rachel says that it only happened after George Floyd’s death and the Black Lives Matter movement that has swept the nation. Here’s what you need to know.

During an interview with Andy Cohen on Watch What Happens Live, Rachel says that she “hates the timing” of the decision made by the show’s executive producers. “It does seem like a reaction to what’s happening in our country. Did a man have to die in such a public way, on a national stage, for you to say, ‘Now is the time for us to have a black Bachelor?'” Lindsay questioned. “That’s what I hate. It’s taking away from this moment.”

She continued: “What I wanted was some acknowledgment and some recognition that they’ve been wrong and part of the problem and they’re going to vow to make the necessary changes to bring diversity internally and to more contestants of color on the show.”

Earlier this month, Rachel Lindsay threatened to leave ‘The Bachelor’ franchise after noting that in over 40 seasons of the hit ABC soap, there has only been one black lead. She said, “You are almost on par to say you’re more likely to become the president of the United States than you are a black lead in this franchise. That’s insane. That’s ridiculous.”

Rachel also said that on ‘The Bachelor’, “people of color become placeholders as the token person of color to add some flavor,” adding, “I have not been loud enough on the deep-rooted, 18-year systemic problems in this franchise… I have come to the conclusion that if changes are not made on the inside and outside of the franchise, I will dissociate myself from it.”
