Amanda Seyfried is facing a wave of criticism after publicly calling Charlie Kirk “hateful” in the wake of his shocking death.
The 39-year-old “Mean Girls” star responded to an Instagram post highlighting Kirk’s controversial statements on abortion, immigration, and race. The post quoted Kirk saying, “‘Ask yourself, why is exposing the flaws of MLK’s life and character — something he said we should judge others by — so controversial?’ – Charlie Kirk, January 2024.” Seyfried’s comment simply read, “He was hateful.”
The actress intensified the reaction by resharing a text post on her Instagram Stories that read, “You can’t invite violence to the dinner table and be shocked when it starts eating,” seemingly implying that Kirk’s rhetoric may have contributed to the circumstances of his death.
Seyfried’s remarks have ignited backlash across social media platforms. On X, users called for boycotts of her films and criticized her for appearing to justify Kirk’s assassination. One user wrote, “Amanda Seyfried believes Charlie Kirk assassination was justified. Make sure to never see another one of her movies.” Another added, “I am not watching any more movies with Amanda Seyfried. She is spreading the lie that Charlie Kirk was hateful. She should lose her job.”
Some critics accused Seyfried of hypocrisy, pointing to her logic on violence. “According to Amanda Seyfried, Kirk deserved to be assassinated because he encouraged violence. By that logic, people who were violent during the George Floyd protests deserved to be shot,” one user argued.
Negative comments also flooded her Instagram, including posts on a pinned photo of Seyfried and her cat Bert from August 2023. “Horrible character you’ve shown. Be a better person,” one user wrote. Another commented, “I will never watch anything with you in it. You need to research Charlie and know he never hated anyone or anything. Maybe you need to look inside your cold heart.”
Charlie Kirk, the conservative activist and founder of Turning Point USA, was fatally shot on September 10 while on stage at Utah Valley University in Utah during his American Comeback Tour. He was 31. Kirk and his wife, Erika Kirk, leave behind two young children: a 3-year-old daughter and a 1-year-old son.
The fallout from Seyfried’s comments shows how polarizing the aftermath of Kirk’s death has become, with fans and critics alike scrutinizing public figures for their responses to the tragedy.
