Actress Jordan Whitley, known for the show Tampa Baes which focuses on a group of queer women, has caused a stir on TikTok after she referred to herself as a ‘le-dollar-bean,’ rather than a lesbian.
Actress Jordan Whitley Causes A Stir By Referring To Her Character As ‘Le-Dollar-Bean’ And Not A Lesbian
Jordan, for her part, had been cast to play a lesbian character. Therefore, people were astounded as to why she would refer to herself as anything other than that.
After all, there has been a huge shift in recognising the concerns of the LGBTQ community of late. In the following video here, we can see Jordan making the following comment: “Everyone in my life knows in fact that I’m a le-dollar-bean.”
Naturally, this led to an interesting debate on social media. Some suggested that there was a huge contradiction in not being proud of saying what role a person was playing.
One person wrote: “When ur cast on a lesbian reality show, but u still can’t say the word lesbian,” while another stated: “Did you know that every time you say le$bean, it takes a year off of a lesbian’s life expectancy.”
And yet, on closer inspection, it is easy to see why the actress might have done this. Given that TikTok is originally a Chinese social media platform, in the sense that it was created by Chinese developers, the country still has a conservative attitude towards the LGBTQ community, with it often being frowned upon.
As such, there have been instances in the past where videos have been censored simply because they included words concerning such groups. This was one of the reasons why the social media platform was heavily criticised when it first came online.
Fans have called for action to be taken, so that all groups can be recognised equally. One user stated: “It was funny as a joke for a second, but this has gone to the point of shaming lesbianism again.”
Whereas another said: “Lesbian isn’t a bad word. Queer was used as a slur more predominately. Reclaim them all!” This story shows that there is still a long way to go when it comes to recognising LGBTQ rights.
