Emma Heming Willis shares the devastating status of her husband, Bruce Willis‘s condition. Mrs. Willis explains that it isn’t clear whether her husband understands his diagnosis and what he is facing.
Bruce Willis has frontotemporal dementia. This condition damages the neurons in the brain, which results in difficulty with speech, walking, and motor skills, among other things. People with the illness typically live six to eight years.
Essentially, it involves the loss of nerve cells, affecting the frontal and temporal lobes in the brain. Heming Willis spoke with Hoda Kotb of the Today show, who told her it’s “hard to know” whether her husband knew what was happening.
Heming Willis was accompanied by Susan Dickenson, the Association for the Frontotemporal Degeneration’s CEO, on the show to discuss the diagnosis. “One of the things that the frontal lobe controls is self-insight,” Dickenson explained,
“Some people, it’s the first thing they lose is any understanding that they have changed.”
Bruce Willis Diagnosed with Aphasia
Willis’s family broke the news in March 2022 that the popular action star was retiring from acting due to his aphasia diagnosis. A person who has aphasia may speak in only short sentences.
They may struggle with communication and talk in a way that does not make sense. The person may also have decreased understanding of reading and writing.
It would devastate an actor or anyone working in Hollywood because the job entails memorizing scripts and speaking the dialogue. Bruce Willis had no choice but to bow out of the business gracefully once he received the diagnosis.
There is also a specific type of aphasia that occurs with dementia. It directly affects language and speech, which Willis has to contend with.
Willis’s wife and family expressed in a statement from a previous interview about the limitations concerning the lack of information about the illness.
“Today, there are no treatments for the disease, a reality that we hope can change in the years ahead. As Bruce’s condition advances, we hope that any media attention can be focused on shining a light on this disease that needs far more advancement and research.”
Bruce Would Want to Help Others
Bruce’s family knows that if he were aware of his condition, he would want to shed light on this disease and help others tormented by it.
Bruce has always championed bringing attention to complex subjects that are otherwise not discussed.
He would want to connect with others experiencing the debilitating symptoms of the illness and reach out to them and let them know they are not alone.
Heming Willis also talked about how they had to explain the diagnosis to their two young daughters, Mabel and Evelyn.
She said it was important to tell them what the disease is so that there would not be shame and stigma attached to their Dad’s diagnosis. She believes that this diagnosis has taught their daughters “love, patience, and resilience.”
Heming Willis expressed that even though the news about Willis’s condition deteriorating is awful and heartbreaking, she feels you can find something beautiful daily to focus on.
