CBS ‘The Young and the Restless’ (Y&R) spoilers aren’t sure how to feel about this throwback spoiler, as it really hits us in the feels.

This is one of those episode that will still hurt fifteen years later, it originally aired on May 24, 2005, and it’s going to continue to hurt for a good many fans. It broaches the topic of a parent losing their child and being powerless to do anything about it.

It’s a theme that’s been used in shows for decades as television has turned to more dramatic storylines. It’s awesome when they do this, but it also sucks as we hate dealing with the emotion that comes with it. But that’s what makes episodes like this memorable; it’s what helps them stand out to us years after the fact.

CBS ‘The Young and the Restless’ Spoilers Throwback For July 29: Something different

Generally, we get flowing speeches to make us feel a little better, as we will when Cassie Newman (Camryn Grimes) talks to her family.

It’s as much a staple as any other, and writers love to pen overly dramatic flourishes to get our attention and squeeze every last drop of emotion out of us. But this one goes beyond that.

In most shows, the death happens off screen like in an accident or everyone’s in another room when it comes. We rarely sit in the room with the family as the child’s life drains away.

CBS ‘The Young and the Restless’ Spoilers Throwback For July 29: Cassie’s Passing

But daytime television uses these moments to really drive the knife into our hearts, and it’s what sets them apart.

They document every minute of these situations and make us sit through them, suffering along with the loved ones and the dying individual.

It’s a pretty cool, if morbid and cruel, design that elicits the dramatic effect they want, and we can’t look away. In many ways, it’s like watching a car wreck. We know it’s bad, but we have to watch.

CBS ‘The Young and the Restless’ Spoilers Throwback For July 29: Bringing a family together

Death is also a great tool, if used right, that can bring warring family members back together as they show support for one another.

They commiserate and help each other grieve. Especially those that usually dominate and control everything but are unable to. It humanizes everyone and puts them all on the same level.

It’s also a great lesson for us as we look at friends and family we’re warring with for one reason or another. Do we really need an emergency to bring us together? Wow, ‘Young and the Restless’ really took the fun out of this one, didn’t we?
