Daytime television fans were none too pleased with Andy Cohen said that his Housewives franchise has apparently ‘replaced’ soap operas. During ABC’s special The Story of Soaps, the television personality said, “The goals of reality TV and soap operas are pretty similar: It’s to educate sometimes, entertain always. Once you’re telling the people who were watching soaps, ‘Wait, watch this, this is compelling,’ it was pretty easy to get sucked into that. And then you’re starting to consider Court TV or CNN as a viable alternative to All My Children or One Life to Live.”
He then added, “We want to be entertained, and I think that the ultimate expression of voyeurism is reality television. I know [Susan] Lucci doesn’t agree with me, but I think that the Housewives have replaced soap operas because truth is stranger than fiction. Soaps became kind of unnecessary because you could do it with real people, and they’re writing the drama themselves.”
Andy Cohen Has Some Choice Words For Daytime Television Fans
Of course, the moment soap fans lashed out at Andy for his comments during the special, he responded on Twitter by saying, “I went to the interview as a soap fan prepped to talk soaps, and they asked about reality tv and I answered their questions. Sue me!”
Needless to say, it didn’t take very long for soap fans to fire back. Quite a few comments from Andy’s critics have included, “What is this comment, ‘sue me?’ Andy Cohen is really becoming obnoxious, he needs to calm down,” along with, “Yeah, same here! I think his fame has gotten above way and beyond.”
Another fan wrote, “Daytime television is in a different league than the Real Housewives and the other reality television shows. There’s just no comparison. This is all scripted TV whereas on reality shows it’s all exploitation and embarrassment. I’m not sure what Andy is talking about but the soap world has paved the way for a lot of actors to have great and successful careers in Hollywood and the film industry.”
