Every once in a while a show comes along that needs very little advertisement as word of mouth is enough for people to get hooked. That is exactly the case for the success that Normal People has achieved on the BBC. The show was never officially broadcast on BBC One or Two, with viewers able to binge every episode on the iPlayer or Hulu.

The ratings are staggering for the show that stars Paul Mescal and Daisy Edgar-Jones. It has smashed the figures in the UK of Killing Eve, with Normal People peaking at 21.8 million streams. In comparison, Killing Eve has managed to peak at just under eleven million. But, why has Normal People been able to engross everybody in the UK?

BBC’s Normal People: What’s It About?

The series is based on the book by Sally Rooney of the same name, and tells the love story of Marianne Sheridan and Connell Waldron. Normal People follows the two main characters from their school days and through university and afterwards. The two characters are constantly drawn back together with a deep love between them.

If you aren’t a fan of explicit shows, then Normal People probably isn’t for you. There is almost 50 minutes of sex scenes over the course of the 12 episodes, with the show gaining critical acclaim for how these are filmed. It has also gained outstanding reviews for its ability to show the importance of mental health issues and the writing, acting and shooting is among the best that you can expect to see on television.

    BBC’s Normal People: Critical Acclaim

The show has been welcomed by critics, as they have revealed that it is a ‘modern masterpiece’. Edgar-Jones and Mescal are the stars of the show, and how they manage to portray their feeling throughout leaves viewers wanting them to get together and live happily ever after. The show is compelling from the very first minute, as the raw emotional attachment that you feel towards the characters will see the 30-minute episodes race through.

The two lead characters recently featured on The Late Late Show where they talked to James Corden about the success that they have achieved. It’s a show that has never been more important than right now, with some viewers claiming that it has changed their life and has given them a fresh insight into mental health issues.
