The SAG-AFTRA strike was nearly over after five meetings in ten days and they had reportedly gotten everything they wanted. All that was left was to sign the contract and things in Hollywood would return to normal, not that many Americans care according to many polls.
But as is typical in any poorly written production, an unnecessary and unneeded plot twist was put into play by the Fran Drescher as the guild attempted to tap into the revenue stream for streaming services.
Fran Drescher Demanding More in Contract Talks Show How Far Out of Tough Hollywood Elites Are with Average People
Since such an attempt met with a hard no previously, the guild’s committee came up with a way to not tap into the studios’ revenue and charge the subscribers instead.
So, instead of wanted a 1% levy on all streaming revenue, they proposed a $1 per subscriber per year fee that would go to the guild instead of the actors for the guild to decide what to do with it, and as we all know, that translates into the guild spending it on themselves 9 out of 10 times like with the bank bailouts years ago.
In short, they want regular people to pay a little more when streaming service prices have been inching up and people are struggling to pay their bills to, as Drescher was quoted in The Wrap as saying: “Think how much better actors’ lives will be.”
Beyond out of touch
This is just further evidence at how out of touch Hollywood is with the average person when we’re expected to ensure the elites continue to live comfortably.
This appears as nothing more than an attempt by the guild to fill their coffers without a care that the coast will be put on the consumer.
Add in the fact other guilds like the writers and so on will want the same thing or more when the time comes to renew their contracts, and subscribers will get shafted.
It’s basic economics. When the expenses to operate rise (items to sell, utilities, wages) prices go up. A perfect example is every time the minimum wage has gone up so have the prices and it’s continued to se the new poverty level. That’s a fact.
And with many households struggling to pay their bills with rampant inflation and increasing prices, the guild wants to take more to support themselves.
This appears to be the breaking point as the studios walked out and it looks like there won’t be any more talks for a while.
We’re sure this will be the point of talks and jokes at the next awards ceremony no one tunes in to watch.
