Thursday evening was the night that was heralded as one of the most significant general elections of our lifetimes. The results came in during the early hours of the morning and the consensus of the British public couldn’t have been more overwhelming, as Boris Johnson won the majority that he craved.

As is typical with British parliament, Johnson travelled to Buckingham Palace to meet with the Queen after being elected as Prime Minister. Here, he will be invited to form a government for her Majesty. The Queen has no political allegiance, which means she will be unbiased when the two meet later today.

    Royal News: General Election

The official title for the meeting between the two most powerful figures in Britain is called an audience. It is when Johnson will officially be prime minister following the result. The two will become very familiar with each other as they will meet on a weekly basis while Johnson holds his position.

Many believed that the election was going to be a lot closer than it was with Johnson main opponent Jeremy Corbyn attempting to win the youth vote. However, he was unable to do that and Johnson achieved the biggest win for his party for 33 years. The result was inevitable according to the Exit Poll, which is a scientific way of determining the way of the vote before the results roll in.

    Royal News: Expected Result

That poll showed that the Conservatives and Johnson were streets ahead of the opposition. It also predicted a damaging night for Labour and Corbyn. The latter of those was also accurate as the party lost seats, which means Johnson can now press ahead with his promise of getting ‘Brexit Done’.

That mantra was the narrative of the whole election and was ultimately the undoing of the Labour party. Corbyn refused to pick a side and instead opted to focus on other issues such as the minimum working wage and the NHS. Both would have been strong for any other election. But not this ‘Brexit Election’ as it was constantly referred to.

Johnson’s first day in office started with a press conference where he thanked the public for their trust in him, before acknowledging his main rivals; with Jo Swinson (Liberal Democrats) and Corbyn, both forced to stand down after damaging results. He would then head to Buckingham Palace to meet with the Queen. Before then returning to Downing Street to form his government.

The political year that Great Britain has had may be mentioned in the upcoming Queen’s Speech on Christmas Day, with her Majesty likely to attempt to reconnect the country with some wise words.
