Gillian Keegan, the Secretary of Education, has expressed her opinion that white privilege should not be presented as being a fact within school curriculums.
British Education Secetary Gillian Keegan Denies White Privilege
The concept of white privilege signifies the notion that racism is deeply entrenched in Western society, and that white individuals reap benefits due to their skin color. Keegan indicated that educators had been instructed to carry out impartial discussions regarding these matters.
In her comments, she said: “You shouldn’t be teaching things as fact that are debates. I mean I don’t think it’s a fact. I don’t, for me, think that there is a privilege to being white on its own, no.”
Furthermore, she noted that conversations had taken place through her concerning instruction in critical race theory, faith, physical health, and sexual instruction, as well as some components of transgenderism and whether this was appropriate for certain age groups.
In addition, she made it absolutely clear in no uncertain terms that parents should have full insight into what is being taught to their children in schools. This naturally led to the question of whether Keegan thought that the current teaching profession was too woke.
In response, she added: “Not necessarily. I mean, I don’t have that view. I mean, all the teachers I speak to are hugely dedicated, hugely innovative, as well, and very pastoral as well in their care for our children.”
The response on social media was mixed. While a certain subset disagreed with what the Education minister had to say, others felt that there was merit to her claims as other factors had an impact on the life chances of an individual.
One person wrote: “White working class kids are the least likely to go to university. The only privilege that exists is economic.” This is clearly a very touchy subject which is why there should be full and frank discussions concerning it.
