Ashanti, for her part, is very successful in her own right. She has managed to have a career spanning around two decades, which got her a Hollywood Walk of Fame star. While that may have been the case, she did have to navigate some strange hurdles.
According to the 42-year-old singer, she was working with a producer on some songs. In spite of his claims that he would not charge her for the two tracks they collaborated on, things changed when it came time to release the album. She was shocked when he suggested they take a shower together, believing it to be a joke.
In her comments, she said: “I thought he was joking, [but he was] dead serious. [He wanted] $40,000 per track. I thought he was joking because, you know, we had been working with each other, for like, I don’t know, a couple of weeks.”
She talked a bit about the sexual harassment back in 2018, when the #MeToo hashtag was at its peak, but she never mentioned the producer’s name. “A little crush’ on her,” she says, is what made the producer suddenly demand $45,000 for a track. Her family intervened and, as ‘an apology,’ she got “three records for free.”
The fans on social media outraged by this revelation. A significant proportion of people could not believe that a producer would do such a thing. And in the process, they condemned the actions outright. One person wrote: “Mfs can’t be normal nowadays and it shows. Unprofessionalism at its best.”
This was clearly a very difficult time for Ashanti, but by speaking out, it will warn others over the dangers that can emerge when people are taken advantage of in the music industry.
