This week, a Missouri radio host had to go live on air to report on the school shooting in St. Louis while she was unsure of her daughter’s condition and aware that she was inside the building.

KMOX news reporter Debbie Monterrey in St. Louis received ominous texts from her senior at the Collegiate School of Medicine and Bioscience, Caeli, age 17, informing her that there was an intruder on campus and loud bangs were being heard. The whole time, Monterrey was live on the air, covering the incident as it happened. According to her, there was a brief period of silence while she collected herself before she spoke to continue doing her job, which involved maintaining composure.

She went to Twitter to share her experience saying, “This morning I was on the air @kmoxnews when my daughter began texting me that her school was on lockdown. Sirens. Screaming. Then I have to begin talking ONE THE AIR about the latest school shooting in America. My daughter’s school.

The fact that Monterrey later spoke about the bizarre experience and said she had to keep her composure as best she could in the moment suggests that she managed to get through it. She also said she broke down in tears when they cut to a commercial because she had just learned that her daughter was safe.

A student and a teacher were shot and killed by the 19-year-old gunman, who also reportedly injured seven others, using an AR-15-style weapon. After a shootout, he was ultimately killed by police. According to reports, Harris attended the high school and graduated a year earlier.
