Hollywood actor Matthew McConaughey has spoken passionately in favour of gun control.
Matthew McConaughey Speaks Out In Favour Of Gun Control Following Texas School Shooting-‘We Need Red Flag Laws’
The actor’s comments arrived on the back end of the Texas school shooting at Robb Elementary school, in which a reported 19 children died, as well as two adults killed. As a result, Matthew was on hand to deliver a speech at a White House Briefing following a meeting with United States President Joe Biden on Tuesday, 7th June 2022.
During the course of his comments, Matthew urged people to put aside any party politics and come together on an issue which he felt needed to be tackled first hand. In his comments, he said: “We need background checks. We need to raise the minimum age to purchase an AR-15 rifle to 21.
“We need a waiting period for those rifles. We need red flag laws and consequences for those who abuse them.” The star is well aware of the mood in Texas. Not only was Matthew born there, but in the aftermath of the incident, he decided to take a trip back to the state and visit his hometown of Uvalde.
In the process of doing so, he had a meet and greet with some school children to show that the community was coming together. In the image here, the actor is surrounded by a group of children and some teachers.
The post was captioned by the following comments: “Appreciate Uvalde native Matthew McConaughey helping us heal.” The responses to Matthew’s comments on social media were mixed.
While people recognised that he was trying to do the right thing, others questioned why he had authority to speak out instead of others. One person wrote: “Since when did a Hollywood actor become a Lobbyist?”
