Someone sure has a lot of explaining to do. According to new reports, the Santa Fe County Sheriff says that they have found concerning information that has been found in text messages during the investigation into the fatal shooting of cinematographer Halyna Hutchins. Actor Alec Baldwin held the gun that killed Hutchins but says that he didn’t pull the trigger. Here’s what you need to know.
Sheriff Adan Mendoza said the messages discussed the possible use of live ammunition on a different movie set a few months prior to the start of production on the Rust movie.
Alec Baldwin Update: Santa Fe Sheriff Finds Concerning Texts During Rust Movie Investigation
The department recently released all files relating to its ongoing investigation into the tragic incident, including video footage of Alec Baldwin practicing with a revolver, and the actor’s interviews with officers afterwards. Mendoza said: “There was complacency on the set, there was disorganization and a degree of negligence, whether that rises to a criminal level that’ll be up to the district attorney.”
Back in February, Santa Fe District Attorney Mary Carmack-Altwies told Vanity Fair she had watched Alec Baldwin’s bombshell interview with ABC in December and was drawn to the actor’s claim that he did not pull the trigger. As it’s been reported many times by now, Halyna Hutchins died after Alec Baldwin allegedly shot and killed the cinematographer by accident while on the set of the film.
A video created by the attorneys showed an animated recreation of the shooting. The attorneys said in the video that Baldwin had turned down training for the kind of gun draw he was doing when he shot Hutchins.
“You can pull the hammer back without actually pulling the trigger and without actually locking it,” Carmack-Altwies said. “So you pull it back partway, it doesn’t lock, and then if you let it go, the firing pin can hit the primer of the bullet.”
