American hit band ‘Green Day’ has officially declared that they will not be performing in Russia amid the country’s war with Ukraine.

American Band ‘Green Day’ Boycotts Russia By Cancelling Their Concert-‘This Moment Is Not About Stadium Rock Shows’

The band were expected to go to Russia this spring and perform at the Spartak Stadium in Moscow. But given what has transpired, they felt that it was necessary to take a stand to show some solidarity with those affected by the conflict.

In a post to their fans on Instagram, the band declared that it was the right thing to do. They said: “With heavy hearts, in light of current events we feel it is necessary to cancel our upcoming show in Moscow at Spartak Stadium.

“We are aware that this moment is not about stadium rock shows, it’s much bigger than that.” This move is also significant in light of the background decisions that are taking place against Russia.

Fifa had also recently announced that Russia would not be allowed to take part in any international competitions in an attempt to put further pressure on the country, so that they would stop their attack on Ukraine.

And if things continue in a similar light, there is also the possibility that further musicians could jump on the bandwagon and disassociate themselves from Russia. And yet, Greenday did give some encouragement for their fans by stating that they would hope to return to the country once everything was resolved.

The statement added: “But we also know that rock and roll is forever and we feel confident there will be a time and a place for us to return in the future.” The fans on social media were fully behind their decision.

They were of the view that more musicians needed to follow this example, given that they had seen the success of such policies during the collapse of Apartheid in South Africa. One fan wrote: “Other musicians and bands need to follow their example.”

Now that Green Day have set their position out very clearly, it will be fascinating to see whether other artists have the courage to do the same. After all, this approach is bound to have an impact at some point.
