With how many of us travel by flight every day, the idea of a plane crash is terrifying, but what about two of them? The new Netflix documentary: Downfall: The Case Against Boeing is diving deep into the tragic events that took place on March 10, 2019. This is the day that Ethiopian Airlines Flight 302 just literally fell out of the sky right after takeoff in Addis Ababa. This crash killed 157 people who were on board.

    Netflix: What Happened?

This documentary focuses on two plane crashes that had similar circumstances. The Ethiopian flight was on a brand new Boeing 737 MAX 8 aircraft, so of course, no one expected this to happen. Michael Stumo’s daughter was on the plane when it crashed. She was killed instantly.

He tells cameras, “You can’t think. You can’t move through the day.” He said that his daughter had “so much promise and potential.” They were working together at a health care nonprofit called ThinkWell. This day was incredibly hard on him and added to the trauma in his life. Twenty years prior to this, he and his wife lost their 2-year-od child to cancer.

He added, “I could not believe Samya could be on that plane. I could not lose another child. We flew there to bring her home. But we learned there were no survivors. Then we learned we could not bring home her body or even fragments of her body. I stood on that Ethiopian agricultural field, with my family, looking at the crater. Feeling her.”

Back in October of 2018, another Boeing plane simply fell out of the sky right after takeoff. All 189 passengers and crew members were killed in this crash too. Although this is a very rare occurrence, it looks like these crashes are linked. Stumo knew he had to take a stand for these victims and he went to Congress and spoke to the press to get someone’s attention.

That is when he found Rory Kennedy, who is the child of Robert F. Kennedy and a documentary film maker. The documentary features many family members of those who died in these crashes and they hope that they can be seen and heard now. After Congress looked into these cases, they decided that “the horrific culmination of a series of faulty technical assumptions by Boeing’s engineers, a lack of transparency on the part of Boeing’s management, and grossly insufficient oversight by the FAA.”

Boeing has said that they have made some changes at all levels of their business and agreed to pay fines and settlements from the family members involved.

Be sure to catch the whole story on the new Netflix documentary.
