Actor Rockmond Dunbar has reportedly sued Disney and 20th Television on the grounds of racial discrimination following their decision to reject his Covid-19 vaccine exemption.

Rockmond had been one of the main characters on ‘9-1-1’ until he was written out after the set required actors to be vaccinated, which he was not.

And given that he had a medical/religious exemption, he felt that this should have been recognised. It is not surprising to hear that he has taken legal action, as a result.

After all, he has been left unemployed coupled with the fact that his earnings are bound to have taken a serious hit. According to the lawsuit, Rockmond alleges that other crew members could also not be vaccinated but were accommodated anyway.

Not only that, Rockmond alleges that he had been assured he would stay on the show before being written out.

In the wording of the lawsuit, Rockmond stresses the following: “The administrators who work for [the studios] never took Mr. Dunbar’s requests for accommodations seriously.

“Defendants refused to believe Mr. Dunbar’s doctor’s recommendation, and they refused to engage with Mr. Dunbar in any meaningful interactive communication regarding his religious beliefs.”

The chances of the actor actually succeeding are going to be very difficult for the following reasons. First of all, the TV network could argue that it was a decision made by the company.

Therefore, as a private company, they should be allowed to do what they believe is best for the sake of their workers.

Secondly, given that the pandemic has become such a topical issue, accepting a medical exemption could equally alienate other members of the cast who had decided to take the vaccine.

Nevertheless, fans were not so keen to support the actor. Large numbers of people felt that Rockmond had to accept the consequences of his actions.

One person wrote: “It was known that anyone working in the A section had to be vaccinated. He chose not to. Bye, Felicia!”

Regardless of what you think about Rockmond, it is safe to say that he will continue to stand by his truth. But whether it leads to tangible successes is anyone’s guess. Time will tell.
