Joe Rogan knows how to get people talking, huh? There’s a new report that says the White House has jumped in on the controversy of spreading COVID-19 misinformation on podcasts such as Joe’s by saying that online platforms like Spotify can do more to stop it in the first place. Here’s what you need to know.
Press secretary Jen Psaki said the streaming giant’s introduction of content advisory warnings was a “positive step” but that all major platforms needed to be “responsible and vigilant.”
The White House Says More Can Be Done To Stop COVID-19 Misinformation On Spotify
At a White House press briefing last week Psaki was asked about the actions of the streaming giant. “Our hope is that all major tech platforms – and all major news sources, for that matter – be responsible and be vigilant to ensure the American people have access to accurate information on something as significant as Covid-19,” she said.
However, Spotify has decided to side with Rogan after Neil Young accused him of spreading COVID-19 misinformation. As a result, Neil Young has decided to pull his music from the online streaming giant. Spotify confirmed Young’s actions in a statement to the press, saying that the company “regret[s] Neil’s decision to remove his music” from the streaming service:
“We want all the world’s music and audio content to be available to Spotify users. With that comes great responsibility in balancing both safeties for listeners and freedom for creators. We have detailed content policies in place and we’ve removed over 20,000 podcast episodes related to COVID since the start of the pandemic. We regret Neil’s decision to remove his music from Spotify, but hope to welcome him back soon.”
The Joe Rogan Experience – reportedly downloaded almost 200 million times a month – is Spotify’s most popular, with its host having attracted criticism for his views on Covid, including a suggestion that young and healthy should not get jabbed. The streaming company has now confirmed it has removed over 20,000 podcast episodes related to Covid misinformation since the start of the pandemic and hoped to welcome Young back soon.
