Regina King offered a succinct, and extremely sad statement to news outlets like Today and People Magazine on Saturday, January 22, saying, “Our family is devastated at the deepest level by the loss of Ian. He is such a bright light who cared so deeply about the happiness of others. Our family asks for respectful consideration during this private time. Thank you.”
This was just after the celebrated actress King confirmed that her only son, Ian whom she shared with her ex-husband, Ian Alexander Sr., had died by suicide one day prior, only three days after his 26th birthday.
Regina King “Surrounded by So Much Love” After Son, Ian’s Tragic Suicide
The news shocked fans of the If Beale Street Could Talk actress, and fans of Ian himself, a DJ who performed under the name Desduné. However, after uncovering Ian’s latest tweets, they have begun to see that the troubled young man may have been crying out for help.
In his most recent social media posts, the 26-year-old likened the inside of his mind to that of a Sponge Bob cartoon were smaller versions of himself creating chaos. He also admitted to feeling like Instagram was an unsafe space for him.
As the news created shockwaves for the King family, the One Night in Miami director turned to close friend Vivica A. Fox for support. Speaking out in hopes to reassure fans of the Academy Award winner, Vivica described trying to be there for her friend but feeling overwhelmed by emotion herself.
She has assured those mourning for her grief-stricken friend that Regina is “going to get through this” and that “she’s OK”. Vivica also stated that Regina wanted to let those reaching out to her that she appreciates the love and the texts she is receiving. “She’s surrounded by so much love, y’all. That was the beautiful thing, that when I got there, our community is right there for her.”
Fans and other celebs have been leaving messages of love and support for the actress for what has been yet one more tragic and “too soon” loss that has , sadly, already become a trend for 2022.
We’re so sorry for your loss, Regina and family.
