The #FreeBritney movement started quite a while before Britney Spears’ explosive testimony of the abuse she alleged she suffered under the conservatorship that has controlled her personal and business decisions since 2008. However, the movement got a huge boost when Framing Britney Spears came out and only got bigger when the star herself spoke out against the arrangement. Let’s take a look at the stepping stones that led to a huge ruling today. We’ll also share Britney’s reaction to the latest developments.
#FreeBritney update: Step one for #FreeBritney
Sure, the public was on the side of #FreeBritney. However, that one testimony didn’t just fix everything. First, Britney had to fight to get her own representation, instead of the lawyer assigned to her since 2008. That choice was eventually granted and Britney chose Mathew Rosengart, a former federal prosecutor who turned out to be a wise choice.
The next step was to make a crucial change to the conservatorship. That meant getting her father, Jamie Spears, removed from his role in her life. That took a minute, but Rosengart made it happen, setting the stage for the latest news.
On November 12th, 2021, the #FreeBritney movement had a huge reason to celebrate. The hearing scheduled for the day went, as many expected, in her favor. Both her estate and personal conservatorships were terminated in a 40-minute hearing early in the day. Said her attorney, “What’s next for Britney is up to one person — and this is the first time we can say this in a decade. It’s up to Britney. Britney, as of today, is a free woman.” He also thanked the singer and actress for her courage and power.
#FreeBritney update: After #FreeBritney
No one knows what Britney will do now that she’s free of the arrangement she said “ruined my life.” There are rumors out there a big announcement will happen, but there’s no details out there just yet. What we do know is, her battle will have long-reaching consequences for herself, family, and others.
Currently, her team is demanding answers in regards to the handling of her money and, last we heard, there was also an investigation into the reports she was taped without her knowledge or consent in her own bedroom.
There will be other hearings to sort out other details, as well as a lot of investigation on the part of Britney’s legal team. While Rosengart also made it clear whatever happens there is up to her, Britney has been very vocal on Instagram about her desire for justice. So, we’re expecting more news to come soon.
As for the conservatorship issue, this battle is likely to change the whole system around conservatorships and guardianships. There have been quite a few stories from others who know someone in such a situation who are getting more of a platform to speak and effect change.
Plus, this case also put the spotlight on the conservatorship of Amanda Bynes, as well as Star Trek actress Nichelle Nichols. Lawmakers have also been taking action in the wake of Britney’s testimony, although some have criticized the legislation as not being enough to protect people caught in these situations.
#FreeBritney update: Celebrating #FreeBritney
As for Britney, the singer took to Instagram twice after her freedom was granted. In one post, Spears shared a photo of herself in a yellow dress, saying, “I can’t freaking believe it !!!! Again … best day ever”
Another post before that showed footage of #FreeBritney supporters celebrating the news. In the caption, Britney wrote, “Good God I love my fans so much it’s crazy!!! I think I’m gonna cry the rest of the day!!!! Best day ever … praise the Lord … can I get an Amen”
We’re sure the star’s going to take some time to take it all in, but stay tuned! Because we believe she’ll have a lot more to say in the future.
