Phylicia Rashad who portrayed  Claire Huxtable, wife to Bill Cosby’s Cliff Huxtable for 8 years on The Cosby Show has endorsed the disgraced comedian’s release from jail after only 2 years served of his 10 year sentence.

Rashad has stood by her on-screen husband throughout his entire trial and subsequent sentencing. She celebrated the overturn of his sexual assault conviction in a controversial tweet.

“FINALLY!!!! A terrible wrong is being righted- a miscarriage of justice is corrected!,” the actress wrote.

This tweet was about as popular as the decision to release Cosby from jail,  i.e. not at all.

One naysayer who disagreed vehemently with Rashad was another 90’s TV Mom, Janet Hubert who played the original Aunt Viv on Fresh Prince of Bel Air. Tweeting back at Phylicia, she posted a gif of “Disapproving Aunt Viv” and wrote:

“Phylicia what are you thinking!!! I don’t know you but to say this was terribly wrong. EVERYONE knew what he was doing back then. How could you NOT!” The tweet continued with a warning: “Get your umbrella sista here comes the shit shower. I am outraged that he has been released. Yes he is an old ass guilty man!

Hubert’s tweet has been retweeted and liked tens of thousands of times and in a continued thread Janet claims she spoke up about Cosby’s crimes but was dismissed as everyone was focused on her firing from Fresh Prince by star Will Smith.

Though Rashad was quick to tweet out another message, saying she support survivors of sexual assault coming forward and did not mean her tweet to be insensitive, the damage was done.

Howard University, where Rashad has been appointed as Dean of the College of Fine Arts made a statement disparaging Rashad’s comments and making a firm stance on the side of survivors of sexual assault (which is a horrifying thing that statements need to be made about that, like it isn’t a natural response!)

It will be interesting to see how Howard go on addressing this smear to their name in form of their Dean’s support for a man that has had over 60 accusers come forward.

It looks like we’ve lost “America’s Dad” and Mom . Bye Phylicia.
