Tiktoker Addison Rae just released a new singled called “Obsessed” which has undoubtedly gone viral, but one has to wonder just how many of that is legit views and how much of it is just hate watchers?

Now keep in mind as I review this song I come from a different time, I come from the time where Britney and Christina reigned supreme and remember a time when Whitney, Mariah, and Madonna, all topped the charts, so perhaps I’m just expecting too much when it comes to stars these days. Especially tiktokkers, they’re young. They don’t know the ways yet.

    Addison Rae: Obsessed with mediocrity

Addison Rae said that the song talks about how she has had to love herself as much as other people claim to love her on social media and that’s what it’s about. However the thing is from the sound of the song it just doesn’t sound like it was that much of a struggle to love herself as much as her 78.4M followers do.

If you’re expecting a song about the struggles of maintaining a healthy self-image while navigating the pitfalls of social media, you’re expecting way too much. Take down your expectations by about 15 notches, there’s no ‘about’ to this song, it’s literally about someone who has a high opinion of herself, full stop. If this were the 90’s, this would be a parody song.

In fact if one wants to look up a song that coupd be compared to it, look no further than the movie Monster-in-law with Jane Fonda, the Britney parody character in it has a similar song called “If you want to know me look in my makeup bag” except this one doesn’t have the blatant sexual overtones that that one did.

The choreography was very similar to Selena Gomez‘s “Come and Get it”, if Selena had had the production choreographed by say, a high school cheerleading coach. All I’m saying is, the group number gave me similar vibes.

The vocals were kind of lackluster, she didn’t sound bad but she didn’t sound great either, in fact a good description of this song would be “sing-speaking” because that’s what she might as well have been doing. In fact if I had to compare this song to Tana Mongeau‘s “Get high without you” I’d prefer Tana’s.

Her overall look in the video is great, in fact the white crop top is serving some old school “Don’t let me be the last to know” Britney vibes, and I so see what she was going for, but at the same time… it’s still pretty mediocre, though not bad for a first try. Will Addison be a one-hit wonder? Stay tuned!!!
