’90 Day Fiancé’ spoilers finds that  we all love that part of the show that happens every week, where foriegn culture confuses the Americans involved. This week it came in the form of The Hahm Ceremony. Apparently the Hahm ceremony is what happens before the wedding, the groom and I’m assuming his groomsmen, deliver a box to the potential bride’s family and in it are a bunch of gifts.

The gifts are to help the marriage, according to Jihoon. Though why they are given to the in-laws kind of confuses me, but we’ll just go with it. What are we here if not culturally diverse?

’90 Day Fiancé’ Spoilers: The Hahm Ceremony

Here’s where the confusing part comes in, Deavan’s Dad thought that Jihoon was initially saying Ham, as in, the lunchmeat. This guy thought that he was recieving cold cuts in exchange for his daughter’s hand in marriage, I think he was really relieved when Jihoon corrected him.

After all, what’s he going to do with a ham on the way back to the US? Unless it was a canned ham it couldn’t very well be transported, and while some of us aren’t fans of Deavan, I’d like to think she’s worth slightly more than lunchmeat. (Truly though, how insulting would that be?

“Sir, I would like to ask for your daughter’s hand in marriage. In return, please accept my offer of this fine, canned ham for your consumption.” Honestly, it sounds like a Letterman bit from back in the day.)

In all seriousness though, a hahm, is a box of gifts given by the groom, to the in-laws. What’s in the box, you may ask? Good question! Apparently one is a figurine of birds, the birds represent peace in a marriage. They look to be black doves? I couldn’t really tell what kind of birds they were.

Then, Jihoon gives them the fortune that he had a fortune teller write for the couple, foretelling their marriage. Elicia didn’t look too happy about having to get that translated because it was all in Korean, but when you ask a Korean fortune teller, what can you do? I guess she’ll have to make use for google translate! (Don’t worry, Elicia, you can get it for your phone.)

Then, Jihoon had to ask the parents for Deavan, and they told him “Good luck finding her” at first I thought she had actually run out of on him, but as it turns out, this is all part of the ceremony. The bride hides from the groom and then he has to go searching for her.

Jihoon found Deavan easily enough, she was hiding in the closet underneath her big, poofy wedding dress. But then, as she said, there wasn’t a bazillion places to hide in their apartment. Can we just talk about the squid-masks that the groomsmen wore and how scary they were?

Apparently that was to ward off evil spirits. I think everyone’s safe, I certainly wouldn’t want to encounter a man with a scary squid mask in a dark alley.

Apparently the masks were made out of actual squid and Deavan said that it smelled like sewage and raw fish that had been sitting out in the heat on someone’s deck all day. Yuck! And Jihoon ate that! Talk about having a stomach of iron! I’m still kind of wondering what that fortune teller thing said. Guess we’ll never know. Stay tuned!!!
