Each year, the royal family holds various events which they host or attend. Their annual calendar is filled with different traditions and ceremonies, and they appear together as a collective whole.
Summer Is a Busy Time For The Royal Family
Summer is a hectic time for the royals. On June 15th, Trooping the Color will take place, which is the official birthday of the reigning monarch and has been for over 260 years. It dates to King Charles II’s reign in the 17th century.
This year’s event is bound to attract large crowds as Britain celebrates their Sovereign rulers. It involves the seven regiments of the Household Division of the British Army. Every year, one regiment is selected to display its color and present its ceremonial flag.
Soldiers will greet King Charles in uniform as military bands perform, and the Officer in Command will direct the troops.
The royal family will then join His Majesty on the balcony at Buckingham Palace to observe the Royal Air Force flying by as an impressive 41-gun salute rings out into Green Park.
Trooping the Color coincides with the King’s birthday parade, which will witness over 1,400 parading military, 200 horses, and 400 musicians.
It’s a grand affair that is brimming with pomp and circumstance. Kate Middleton was named Colonel of the Irish Guards and will not attend this year, which is a shame because the Irish Guards is set to “troop its color.”
Royal Family Events Are Steeped In Tradition
Another royal family summer event is the Royal Ascot, a horseracing event that occurs over five days. The event has been held annually since 1711 when Queen Anne started the tradition of the race.
A British sovereign has attended the Royal Ascot every year since it was established. The sovereign travels with the other royals in horse-drawn carriages to enter the Royal enclosure. The enclosure is a special racecourse section reserved for the royal family.
The State Opening of Parliament is an event that marks the start of each session of the Parliament of the UK. It is the only event that embodies the three branches of the legislature: The House of Commons, The House of Lords, and the British monarch, all of whom work together as the crown in Parliament.
The Sovereign reads the speech written by the government, which explains the legislative program for the new parliamentary session.
The Wimbledon Championships is steeped in royal tradition, as it is the oldest tennis tournament in the world. The Royal Box on Centre Court is reserved for the royal family, giving them the ideal view of the competition. Princess Catherine is a big fan.
Royal Family Events Will Continue as Planned
The Royal Variety Performance is an event that supports the Royal Variety Charity. The show has been a staple of the royal family since 1912. Local and international artists perform. The funds acquired are distributed to entertainers who may be experiencing health issues or are struggling.
Royal Garden parties also occur in the summer and usually include high-profile guests, as they are major social events hosted by the monarch.
Queen Victoria started the tradition in the 1860s. These are not just parties but also a way to recognize and reward outstanding public service. Guests are treated to a beautiful, picturesque view of the Palace Gardens. An estimated 27,000 cups of tea are consumed at each sun-soaked garden party.
This year, the royal family’s events will continue as planned, despite King Charles’s cancer and treatment, as well as the upcoming election. The King has a full calendar.
