‘General Hospital’ (GH) spoilers reveal that Tyler Christopher’s run on General Hospital was brilliant. He came on the show, and the writers immediately gave him a thrilling storyline. He played his role as Nikolas Cassadine with a sense of mystery, sophistication, and subtle complexity. His nickname quickly became “The Dark Prince.”
Interestingly, he had initially auditioned for the role of Robin Scorpio’s (Kimberly McCullough) boyfriend, Stone Cates, which went to Michael Sutton. However, the producers saw something special about Christopher, and he later won the role of Nikolas.
‘General Hospital’ Spoilers: A Brief History of the Cassadine Family
General Hospital first introduced the Cassadine family in 1981, and they have a rich and multi-layered history on the show. The Cassadines’ feud with the most beloved couple in soap history, Luke and Laura Spencer (played by the legendary Tony Geary and Genie Francis), was intense.
The incomparable Elizabeth Taylor originated the role of Helena Cassadine. She put a curse on Luke and Laura on their wedding day.
You may remember that Mikkos Cassadine (John Colicos), Victor Cassadine (Thaao Penghlis), and Tony Cassadine (Andre Landzaat) were involved in the Ice Princess story. They devised a demented plot to freeze the world using a weather machine.
Carbonic snow was supposed to fall and freeze everything. Luke saved the world and killed Mikkos, as he fell into his ice chamber and froze to death.
In 1996, it was revealed that in 1982, when Laura disappeared, it was discovered that the Cassadines kidnapped Laura and forced her to marry Nikolas’s father, Stavros Cassadine (Robert Kelker-Kelly). Stavros was madly obsessed with Laura.
Stavros told Laura that her husband, Luke, was dead, and he took her to an island. He raped her and impregnated her with Nikolas, and Laura kept it a secret.
‘GH’ Spoilers: Nikolas Cassadine Arrives in Port Charles
Nikolas arrived in Port Charles with his uncle Stefan Cassadine (Stephen Nichols). When Luke found out that Laura bore Mikkos’s child, he was livid.
The story was mined and crafted by using the show’s rich history, which is how all soap storylines should be created, and Tyler Christopher played every beat of it with stunning brilliance and even added layers to his character to make viewers empathize with him, a Cassadine with an agenda.
The reveal rocked the soap world and immediately gave Christopher some meaty material to sink his teeth into. He got to play opposite Genie Francis and Tony Geary AND held his own as he performed his part.
Nikolas quickly became a very popular character. His love story with Emily Quartermaine (Natalia Livingston) was beautiful and unforgettable.
Nikolas got his name after an ancestor who died in battle in the 1800’s. Before he went to war, he made a bracelet for his wife that symbolized their love and devotion.
After he was killed, his wife never took off the bracelet. When she died, Nikolas inherited it. The family’s lore is that when a Cassadine man gives a woman that bracelet, he gives her his heart. Nikolas gave this bracelet to Emily.
Christopher’s run as Nikolas was masterful, and fans never fully accepted another Nikolas when he left the show. Tyler Christopher played Nikolas Cassadine from 1996 to 2016.
