On this day, in 1998, a song came out that changed the landscape of pop music. “Hit Me Baby One More Time” was Britney Spears’s first hit single, which almost didn’t happen.
Before the song came out, no one was on board with the “Hit Me Baby” lyrics. No one wanted a song they thought was referencing domestic violence.
U.S. radio was not a market for those kinds of controversial lyrics. However, it is thought that “Hit Me Baby” is teen slang for “Call Me Baby.”
“…Baby One More Time” Was Offered to Other Acts Who Turned it Down
The song was written by a Swedish pop songwriter, Max Martin. Martin offered the song to the R&B girl group TLC, who immediately turned it down due to the name of the song and its questionable lyrics.
A long-forgotten pop singer named Robyn was offered the song, as were the Backstreet Boys and the Pussycat Dolls. All these pop artists turned it down.
Finally, Martin offered the song to Britney Spears. There were legitimate concerns at first, but she agreed to do it. Britney was flown out to Sweden to work with Max, and magic was made.
The song sold a whopping 500,000 copies on its first day. It made number one on the Billboard Top 100, and the rest, as they say, is history. Britney became a household name and her generation’s most significant pop artist.
Britney was 16 years old at the time, and she came up with the idea to be a schoolgirl in high school and have all these cute boys surrounding her in the video.
Spears came up with the idea of tying her white shirt, revealing her midriff, and showcasing her famously toned tummy, which was pushing boundaries, given her age, but she did it anyway. Teenage girls everywhere were copying her look.
Simon Cowell Was Crushed When “Hit Me Baby One More Time” Went to Britney
The video became even more popular than the song itself. It’s funny because, at the time, Simon Cowell was managing a boy band, and he had begged Max for the song. He turned him down and gave it to Britney.
Simon was crushed. When Max told him the name of the new pop singer whom “Hit Me Baby One More Time” was destined for, Cowell remarked,
“With a name like Britney Spears, she’ll never be famous.”
Luckily for Britney and her gazillion fans, he was wrong. The soon-to-be pop princess came up with the “Oh bay-bay bay-bay” we all know as the beginning of the track and its irrefutable signature.
Even though that was not part of the plan, Britney Spears’s cute little ad-lib worked, and soon enough, everyone was singing her tune, and the song “Hit Me Baby One More Time” was everywhere.
The song had been released as “…Baby One More Time” to make it more radio-friendly. The smash hit song won two awards in 1999. MTV Europe awards Best Song and MuchMusic People’s Choice Awards for Best International Artist.
Twenty-five years have passed, and the song has remained one of the best-selling songs of all time. Ironically, Britney Spears’s highly anticipated tell-all memoir, “The Woman in Me,” hits the shelves tomorrow. It promises to be a juicy and captivating read.
