In her current memoir, “The Woman in Me,” Britney Spears opens up about having postpartum depression after the birth of her two sons, Sean and Jayden.
The media scrutinized Britney during this devastating time in her life. She had a very public mental breakdown and wrote about how her life spiraled out of control.
Britney Spears Gets Candid About Her Mental Health
Britney wrote in her book, “Unfortunately, there weren’t the same conversations about mental health back then as there are now. I hope any new mothers reading this who have a hard time will get help early. Because I know now that I was displaying just about every symptom of perinatal depression: sadness, anxiety, fatigue.”
Half of all women who have postpartum depression develop symptoms during their pregnancy. However, most women are not checked for mood disorders while expecting.
Spears demonstrated a couple of common red flags during her pregnancy: she loved sex and food. Beyond this, she couldn’t experience pleasure the same way.32
Britney didn’t recognize that she displayed any unusual symptoms or suffered from postpartum depression. It is believed that when you are pregnant, you are supposed to experience intense joy and happiness and be glowing.
This joy is exactly why Spears couldn’t let herself believe that she was having depression. It is a myth in our society that you cannot be pregnant and depressed simultaneously.
Britney explained that during this time, she started isolating herself from others and did not want to be around people at all.
Britney thought she was isolating to protect her baby. However, her isolation started to become damaging to her mental health.
Britney’s Public Mental Breakdown
It probably didn’t help that Britney was always in the public eye and being judged. Her mental health continued to decline after she had her babies.
In September of 2005, she gave birth to her son, Sean. In September 2006, Spears gave birth to another son, Jayden. Her postpartum depression went on for about two years.
She also said in her book that she wouldn’t allow her mother to hold her babies and was extremely overprotective and controlling.
In February 2006, she was photographed while driving with her son, Sean, in her lap. Brintey’s parenting skills also came into question when, in May 2006, the paparazzi photographed her almost dropping her baby, Jayden, on his head.
In 2007, Britney infamously shaved her head. Brintey tried to explain, at the time, that she was suffering from postpartum depression and was separated from her two children, and she was going down the tubes fast.
In January 2008, doctors forced Britney to go to a mental health facility after locking herself in a room with her son Jayden. The court granted Kevin Federline sole custody of their children. In February 2008, Spears was placed under conservatorship.
In November 2021, the conservatorship ended. Spears had to contend with the lasting effects of her postpartum depression. She lost custody of her kids and frequently contemplated suicide.
Britney talks more in-depth about her postpartum depression in her new memoir, “The Woman in Me.” The book hit the shelves today, including shocking details about Britney’s life.
