Tom Brady has been heavily criticized after he claimed that the nipple-gate scandal involving Janet Jackson and Justin Timberlake not all that bad for the NFL.

During the 2004 Super Bowl half-time performance, the pair performed in what became noteworthy for all the wrong reasons. A wardrobe malfunction meant that Janet’s nipple was exposed on live TV across the globe.

And since that moment, her career took a nosedive, even if Justin Timberlake continued with his success. While Brady did not see the incident at the time it happened since he admitted that his focus was on the games, the fact of the matter is that he did not see it as being all that bad.

In his comments, he said: “[It was probably a] good thing because it got everybody to talk about it, and it was just more publicity and more publicity for halftime shows. Is any publicity bad publicity? That’s what they say, so who knows.”

Those comments did not go down very well for the following reasons. First of all, it came across as inadvertently trying to dismiss the seriousness of what had happened. After all, this is something that neither Justin nor Janet can ever take back.

Secondly, given that Tom had recently gotten divorced, people could not understand why he would state such insensitive comments. And this was reflected in the comments that followed on social media. One person wrote: “I don’t think he understands the amount of s— she went through after that backlash.

“That comment was too superficial and shallow,” while another person stated: “Janet’s career and legacy was nearly DESTROYED due to the incident, and the ONLY thing Tom Brady can speak on NOW after 19 years is the publicity of the NFL?”
