British Prime Minister Rishi Sunak praised Qatar, the host nation of this year’s FIFA World Cup, for their tremendous efforts in putting together a remarkable tournament.

As the World Cup approached, the news of thousands of migrant workers passing away during the construction of Qatar’s stadiums to accommodate the grandiose sporting event grabbed headlines and sparked a lot of concern.

In 2021, the Guardian conducted an inquiry which revealed that 6,500 migrant laborers passed away since the time Qatar was granted permission to host the World Cup. As soon as the tournament began, tournament officials caused a stir by strictly forbidding any apparel or accessories that featured the colors of the rainbow.

In addition, homosexuality is still illegal in Qatar and could lead to prison. But for all the criticism that may be directed against the Qatari regime, Sunak had nothing but positive words to say about the tournament.

In his comments, he said: “Hats off to Qatar for hosting an incredible World Cup so far. The group stages will be remembered as one of the all-time greats. Come on England keep the dream alive.”

The Prime Minister’s ill-received message was met with an avalanche of criticism on social media, with people reminding him of the ethical issues that have tarnished the tournament. And this was reflected in the comments that played out.

One person wrote: “Yes hats off to them. All that was required was bribery of 11 FIFA committee members, moving the whole tournament to a new time of year and imposing slavery conditions on migrant workers.”

While another person stated: “Which hats? The ones Welsh supporters were told they couldn’t wear because they had a few [sic] too many colours on them?” In reality, the ethical nature of the Qatari nation hosting the World Cup should have been considered from the outset when it was given the right to do so.
