British Royal News suggests you can say what you want, but you certainly can’t heckle a royal no matter how much you dislike him. Two men have been arrested and charged in connection with an alleged assault on a man who “heckled” the Duke of York, during the Queen’s coffin procession in Edinburgh. Here’s what you need to know.
According to reports, the incident happened on Monday, September 12 when the late monarch’s four children followed the state hearse, from the Palace of Holyroodhouse to St Giles’ Cathedral in Edinburgh. A 22-year-old appeared to heckle the Duke of York as he walked behind his mother’s coffin and the two men, both aged 34, allegedly pulled him to the ground.
Prince Andrew’s Heckler Arrested
Previously, the 22-year-old man was charged with breach of the peace over the incident. The man was released by police on an undertaking to appear at Edinburgh Sheriff Court at a later date.
A spokesperson for Police Scotland said: “A 22-year-old man was arrested and charged in connection with a breach of the peace on the Royal Mile around 2.50pm on Monday, September 12. He was released on an undertaking to appear at Edinburgh Sheriff Court at a later date and a report will be sent to the procurator fiscal.”
A Police Scotland spokesperson added: “Two men, both aged 34, have been arrested and charged in connection with assault following an incident on the Royal Mile around 2.50pm on Monday, September 12 2022.”
Meanwhile, it appears as though Prince Andrew is ready to step in for King Charles at any given time. According to the royal family’s website (which still needs updating following Queen Elizabeth II’s death), in the event the monarch may be unable to undertake official duties “due to illness of absence abroad, two or more Counselors of State are appointed by Letters Patent to act in [His] Majesty’s place.”
The five counselors of state include the Sovereign’s spouse and the next four people in the line of succession who are over the age of 21. As it stands, Camilla, Queen Consort, will therefore step in, as well as the Prince of Wales, the Duke of Sussex, The Duke of York and Princess Beatrice.
