John Leguizamo has bashed the upcoming “Super Mario Bros” remake by calling out the lack of diversity in casting.Â
John Leguizamo Hits Out At New Super Mario Bros Movie Over Lack Of Diversity-‘Too Bad They Went All White!’
John, for his part, had the chance to portray Luigi in the first movie, Super Mario Bros, released in 1993. This time around, Chris Pratt and Charlie Day will play the characters of Mario and Luigi respectively. Meanwhile, Seth Rogen will play the iconic Donkey Kong, as Anna Taylor-Joy portrays Princess Peach.
Despite that being the case, John called out the lack of diversity that was portrayed. In a post on Twitter, which has now been removed, he said: “Too bad they went all white! No Latinx in the leads! Groundbreaking colour-blind casting in original!
“Plus I’m the only one who knows how to make this movie work script-wise. Apologise to this movie right now!” That naturally resulted in a response from the producers, as they wanted to let everybody know that the casting was done in a way to portray the story in the best possible manner.
That may not necessarily result in a diverse cast, as there may be situations where diversity has to be sacrificed at the expense of a solid vision. Regardless of what the case may be, the emphasis has been on trying to bring the characters to life.
Shigeru Miyamoto, one of the producers for the movie, had this to say: “We are collaborating with Chris and his experienced team to not just create a character licensed film, but a new piece of entertainment which brings Super Mario Bros to life on the screen.”
The fans on social media did not resonate with John’s comments. A certain subset of people felt his performance in the original movie was far from satisfactory. Therefore, he was not in a position to judge others. One person wrote: “Like he has room to talk, the one he was in was terrible.”
