Katy Perry has been slammed for her support of billionaire Rick Caruso, who had previously supported anti-abortion rights candidates by funding them.
Pro-Choice Katy Perry Condemned For Supporting Billionaire Rick Caruso Amid His Anti-Abortion Track Record
Katy’s stance seemed out of place, especially since she had spoken against the recent Supreme Court’s decision to overrule Roe v Wade on the basis that it was deemed to limit freedom of choice. But given her support for Caruso in running for the Mayor of Los Angeles, her stance was contradictory in nature.
And the fans on social media did not hold back on their condemnation towards the singer. One person wrote: “But you endorsed Rick Caruso who has donated hundreds of thousands of dollars to Republican and anti-abortion candidates???”
While another person stated: “Perhaps you should have done a little more research before supporting billionaire Rick Caruso, known anti-abortionist, for mayor of LA.” Nevertheless, it is important to consider the following points.
First of all, Rick did speak out against the recent overruling of Roe v Wade. Although it is not exactly clear if this was being done as a political move to garner extra support, he still came out to condemn the new decision.
Secondly, perhaps there is a case that Katy was simply ignorant of Rick’s prior track record when it came to his stance on abortion. And if that was the case, then it is clear that she should consider whether she wants to continue supporting him.
Regardless of what Katy decides to do, one thing she did make clear was her dissatisfaction at the new Supreme Court decision. She expanded on how women’s rights were being eroded more than ever, even if people had the opportunity to move to another state to get an abortion should they want it.
In her comments at the time, Katie remarked: “Women in the US have fewer rights than an actual sparkler.” Time will tell if these comments do end up doing more damage to Katy’s public perception.
