Queen Elizabeth has just been dealt a major blow right before her Platinum Jubilee celebration. There’s a new report that says the Archbishop of Canterbury will miss the queen’s Platinum Jubilee service after testing positive for COVID-19. Talk about a bummer, right? Here’s what you need to know.
According to new reports, Justin Welby was diagnosed with mild pneumonia on Thursday and was continuing to work but after developing symptoms over the weekend he tested positive for coronavirus on Monday. In a statement on his website, the Archbishop said he would be resting at home and avoiding contact with others over the coming days.
Queen Elizabeth Dealt Major Blow Before Platinum Jubilee Celebration
Buckingham Palace has been told of his regret that he will not be able to take part in the service, Lambeth Palace said. Welby was also due to light a beacon at Lambeth Palace on Thursday evening as part of The Queen’s Platinum Jubilee Beacons events, instead it will be lit on his behalf. The Archbishop of York, the Most Revd Stephen Cottrell, will preach the St Paul’s sermon on Friday instead.
Meanwhile, 16,000 street parties are expected to be thrown over the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee bank holiday weekend. Councils across England have received “a huge number” of applications from residents eager to celebrate the monarch’s 70-year milestone, according to the Local Government Association (LGA).
What’s more, bars and clubs can stay open until 1am as part of the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee celebrations over the June bank holiday weekend. That’s because home secretary Priti Patel is set to make a special order to relax licensing hours to give venues in England and Wales the option of staying open to 1am, rather than 11pm, during the first weekend in June.
