Disney’s ‘Lightyear’ continues to face pushback after Malaysia became the latest country to ban the film over it same-sex kissing scene.
Malaysia Bans Disney’s ‘Lightyear’ Over Same-Sex Kissing Scene-‘Found To Contain Elements Promoting The LGBT Lifestyle’
The film hit cinemas on Friday, 17th June 2022. But any chances of it becoming a major blockbuster have taken a setback as Malaysia followed the footsteps of ‘The United Arab Emirates’ by stating that the movie had violated its censorship board.
But before that had actually happened, it is claimed that the Malaysian board attempted to reach a compromise. The board had allegedly given the movie the go ahead by putting a parental guidance rating for those under 13.
However, this would be done by placing some modifications that would involve the cutting or muting of scenes that were “found to contain elements promoting the LGBT lifestyle, which violate key aspects of the Guidelines on the Film Censorship.”
But once it became clear that this compromise could not be reached, the Malaysian Board decided to pull the plug on things. The following comments confirmed as much: “However, the film distributors did not agree to comply with the instructions.”
Despite the country taking the decision to ban the film, one man who has not been impressed by all of this has been none other than the film’s lead actor Chris Evans. The former just so happens to play Buzz, which is why he has not been impressed by people opposing an LGBTQ+ scene in the film.
And Chris did not hold back on his condemnation. In his comments, he said: “The real truth is those people are idiots. There’s always going to be people who are afraid and unaware and trying to hold on to what was before.
“But those people die off like dinosaurs. I think the goal is to pay them no mind.” Time will tell if other countries decide to follow in the same way and cancel the film. After all, things are not looking very good. So there you have it folks. What did you think about this? Let us know your thoughts in the comments section below.
