Maurice Benard’s State of Mind recently hosted actor Tyler Christopher. Known for his roles as Nikolas Cassadine on General Hospital and Stefan DiMera on Days of Our Lives, the actor’s been out of the spotlight for a while. We already spoke a bit about some of this conversation in other articles. In this one, we’ll talk about what followed some of these challenges and talk about what Christopher has planned for the future.
Maurice Benard’s State of Mind on beginnings
First off, Maurice Benard’s State of Mind usually delves into a guest’s background and this one was no exception. Christopher admitted to having a great childhood on paper, but there were things that were lessons and perhaps signs of what was to come.
For instance, a moment in the third grade led to him developing a problem with alcohol. Check out the conversation for more about that. But he also has gained a lot of perspective about himself through things that went on when he was a kid.
At one point, the pair talked about Christophe’s sports days. While Christopher admitted to being one of the smaller players physically, apparently he did well enough in high school to earn a spot on his college team. The thing is, he admitted ego and other things got in the way.
He figured things would be as easy in a college team as his high school team, so he didn’t realize he had to step up his game on this new level of the sport. Instead, he ended up focusing a lot of the social aspect of college. The same thing would play a part in his acting life.
He fell into a similar trap as an actor during his first job. He thought it was going to be just as good/easy as the audition. However, he quickly realized that if he didn’t change his approach to the work, he’ll fail like he did in college. He described it all as humbling, and was glad to have those experiences. Because that childhood/teen experience served as a lesson that brought him success as an actor.
Maurice Benard’s State of Mind: Choices
Later on in the conversation he spoke about the events that led to him entering a medical guardianship. However, at one point, he decided to leave Ohio and come back to where his career was. And this led to some humbling and inspiring experiences.
See, he thought he had someone to stay with. However, the person changed their mind at the last minute. As Christopher had most of his money stolen, he had little more than a partly-charged computer. So, this led to him being homeless for a brief time.
We love how, throughout the chat, Christopher stressed that a lot of his situations were mostly his fault. So, he took a lot of ownership in this episode and showed a lot of growth and self-awareness. But he also brought us chills when he spoke about the moment that finally turned things around.
See, he’d used that partly-charged computer to send someone a message from a Starbucks. Sadly, he ended up still stuck on a bench, suffering from burns from being in the sun so long as well as other issues. It got to the point where Christopher felt he was going to die and he prayed that, if that was going to happen, he wanted it to be right then and end what he’s going through.
Only minutes later, the person he’d contacted arrived and called out to him, having been searching for him for a while. It was a beautiful story that shows there is always hope out there. Since then, things have greatly improved for the actor. He’d revealed a new acting project on social media a little while back. And now, he has something else he’s working on.
Maurice Benard’s State of Mind: New plans
Fans of Maurice Benard’s State of Mind know Benard wrote a book about his struggle with mental illness and his career. Well, Christopher is working on a similar book, and from what understood, it sounds like he’s getting help from the same person who helped Benard with his book. Fans in the comments are already looking forward to the project, and it’s not even finished yet!
It might take a minute. Christopher spoke about having some difficulty while putting the timeline of events together. It’s brought up emotions he hadn’t really acknowledged yet, so it’s been a struggle to get it done. However, he’s made it clear in the interview that he wants to get this project done.
Not to get sympathy, but to help other people who see their own struggles in his realize they can get help as well. We’re looking forward to seeing this book in print. If you haven’t seen the conversation for yourself, you really should. There is so much more he spoke about, and it was the most riveting episode yet.
