Amber Heard is now telling her side of the story. The actress cried (sort of) when she told a Virginia jury that her ex-husband Johnny Depp physically abused her multiple times, starting when he slapped her after she laughed at the writing on one of his tattoos. Here’s what you need to know.
Heard took the witness stand for the first time in a widely followed U.S. defamation case brought by Depp, saying the actors had a “magical” relationship until it turned violent. Depp’s first physical outburst, Heard said, came after she asked what was written on one of his faded tattoos. She said he replied “wino,” and she laughed, thinking it was a joke.
Amber Heard Says Johnny Depp Slapped Her Across The Face After She Laughed At His Tattoo
“He slapped me across the face,” Heard said. “I didn’t know what was going on. I just stared at him.” Heard said he slapped her twice more and said “you think it’s funny, b****?”
Depp, a three-time Oscar nominee, and Heard met in 2009 on the set of the film The Rum Diary and were married in February 2015. Their divorce was finalized two years later. He also testified earlier in the trial that he never hit Heard and that she was the one who was the abuser in their relationship.
Depp has filed a defamation case against Heard over a column she wrote for The Washington Post in December 2018 in which she described herself as a “public figure representing domestic abuse.” The 36-year-old Heard never named the 58-year-old Depp but he sued her for implying that he was a domestic abuser and is seeking $50 million in damages. Heard has countersued, asking for $100 million and claiming she suffered “rampant physical violence and abuse” at his hands.
