Survivor 42 spoilers find the long-running competition show promised to pull out all the stops…and most fans agree it delivered.
While a sense of deja vu hung in the air (producers didn’t have time between season 41 and 42 to see how the secret phrases and Shot in the Dark went down like a lead balloon) the fun began right off the bat when three castaways from opposing tribes banded together to win an Advantage Amulet, a double-edged sword that could have the cross-tribe contestants working together to take advantage of the amulet, or cut each other’s throats to increase its power.
Survivor 42 Spoilers: Injuries, Amulets, Fake Blood, and Two Tribesmen Down…What a Premier!
However, it wasn’t the latest in a looooong line of new twists that had fans flocking to Twitter to discuss, vent or revere. It was the fake blood the contestants were able to apply to hoodwink their tribes into thinking they’d just gone through some serious $h!t to get them a dang paddle.
Unfortunately, Hai Giang took this directive and ran with it Stephen King style, looking more like he’d been to an ill-fated prom than cut up by some unforgiving jungle branches.
In the words of Jeff Probst: “Either you slay this game or the game will slay you.”
While Hai’s injuries were of the imaginary variety, poor Daniel Strunk didn’t have it so good. After a very early in the game face plant, he declared, “I think I pulled a Stephenie LaGrossa.” True, Daniel dislocated his shoulder on day one like Stephenie (from the 20th season’s Survivor: Heroes vs. Villains), but Stephenie dislocated hers during a particularly brutal reward challenge rather than tripping over her own feet and popped her own arm back in its socket.
Not dissing Daniel- a dislocated shoulder would have me begging for a bed at Ponderosa…just reminding everyone that Stephenie is a badass.
Daniel was allowed to stay in the game (after a warning to remain vigilant about his arm) however, it wasn’t long before Jeff made a surprise visit on the beach to speak with a castaway, Jackson Fox about his newly disclosed medical issues.
Earlier in the episode, Jackson had opened up to his tribe about the estrangement that had occurred between him and his family after he came out as transgender. The wedge began to dissolve when the 48-year-old healthcare worker stepped up to care for his ill mother.
Unfortunately, being a carer took a toll on Fox who went on lithium to help him with sleep and his anxiety. Though he claimed he no longer needed to be on the drug and was weaning himself off of the lithium before filming, it was decided the side effects of lack of sleep and food and performing physically demanding challenges (the cornerstones of Survivor) while being on the drug were just too dangerous.
In only two days in Fiji, Jackson was noticeably lightheaded, so it seems this was a good call. Jackson claims the 48 hours he spent on Survivor before getting the boot were “the best 48 hours I’ve had ever.”
Of course, Survivor isn’t Survivor without an actual tribal council where the first person voted out of Survivor 42 (though not the first to leave) was Zach Wurtenberger after the Ika tribe suffered a crushing loss during the season’s very first immunity challenge.
Even his “skinny guy alliance” with Romeo Escobar and failed Shot in The Dark couldn’t help Zach, but a huge superfan of the game, he took his ousting in stride, saying, “I just got voted out of Survivor. That’s kind of cool.”
Survivor airs on CBS, Wednesdays at 8pm ET
