He’s a Facebook friend that she might want to unfriend now, for the future, and forever. There are new reports that say Anna Netrebko has gotten the boot from The Met Opera because of her support for Russian President Vladimir Putin.

Apparently, The Met made several attempts to convince Netrebko, who has made statements critical of the war, to rebuke Putin but failed to persuade the singer. “It is a great artistic loss for the Met and for opera,” General Manager Peter Gelb said in a statement Thursday.

Reports say that Netrebko will withdraw from her planned concerts at the Met Opera in New York this spring, the New York establishment announced.

“Failing to comply with Met conditions to repudiate her official support for Vladimir Putin’s war in Ukraine, soprano Anna Netrebko has withdrawn from her upcoming concerts at the Met for Puccini’s ‘Turandot’ in April and May as well as for Verdi’s + Don Carlos + in the next season,” the Opera said in a statement, adding that Ukrainian soprano Liudmyla Monastyrska would replace her for the opera “Turandot”.

As many readers know by now, the west is fighting back against Vlaidmir Putin’s bloody assault on Ukraine. In fact, both the U.S. and Europe are already weighing plans for the Ukrainian government to escape their country for exile abroad, including President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, who has refused to leave Kyiv. That said, there have been discussions about sending one or more members of Zelensky’s government to an external location where a government could be set up in case Kyiv falls and Zelensky is unwilling or unable to get out.

Meanwhile, and as of press time, fears continue to grow for Ukraine civilians after a checkpoint is shelled and evacuations have failed for a second day. Two mortar or artillery shells hit the checkpoint in the suburb of Irpin, northwest of Kyiv, Ukrainian authorities said, and two children were among those killed. Social media video showed extensive destruction.

On Saturday, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said in a Facebook message: “Everyone who can defend their city must continue to fight. Must. Because if everyone leaves, then whose city will it be?”
