‘Real Housewives of Salt Lake City’: Jennie Nguyen Hits Back At Those Suggesting She Has A ‘Blaccent’-‘I Don’t Understand’
Jennie, for her part, is from a Vietnamese background. But given that she has spent a lot of time within the United States, her accent has understandably changed over time.
So much so that she has often been accused of feigning it, and yet, she denied doing anything of the sort, or at the very least, intentionally.
In the reunion, she was alleged to have stated the following: “I don’t see I have a black accent. I grew up in Long Beach, California. It shaped who I am.
“That’s where I get my accent, and I don’t understand why people look at me and say, ‘When I talk to Mary, I have a black accent.’ I don’t see that.”
Nevertheless, Jennie’s cause was not helped for the following reasons. First of all, when Jennie had directed this question towards the other house wives in order to get them to back her, they refused to address whether or not they felt that Jennie had a ‘blaccent.’
Secondly, in any event, given that Jennie was alleged to have only done this when she was interacting with Mary Cosby, the latter was not present at the reunion which meant that she could not address it.
After all, Mary had enough on her own plate to deal with. She had been accused of racism, as well as running a cult as part of her Pentecostal Church. The response on social media was less scathing towards Jennie.
A subset of people felt that things had been taken over board, especially since Jennie had to assimilate to her surroundings which ultimately led to changes in her accent. Therefore, regardless of whether you agree with it or not, it was not intentional.
One person wrote: “I honestly don’t find Jennie blaccent to be an issue, she came from an era where she had to assimilate to her surroundings or she’d be ostracized by her peers, no excuse but I get it.”
